Managers Prepare for Flying J Prescribed Fire Near Tusayan
TUSAYAN, Ariz. – Fire managers are preparing to implement the Flying J Prescribed Fire on the Tusayan Ranger District, Saturday, and Sunday, Oct. 13 and 14, pending appropriate conditions and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approval. The first priority is a 137-acre unit, one mile west of the Grand Canyon Airport. In addition, two burn blocks (18 and 32 acres respectively) may be ignited west of Highway 64 near the Grand Canyon National Park Boundary. Managers are in the process of evaluating a set of parameters that need to be met in order to start the burns, including fuel moisture, temperature, humidity and wind. The forecast shows mostly cloudy conditions with a chance of showers later in the week. This may influence which blocks fire specialists are able to ignite. Prescribed fire helps remove hazardous fuels, improve forest health and enhance wildlife habitat. This wildland urban interface project is part of an ongoing effort to reduce the potential for severe fire occurrence near the community.
