Chugach National Forest Assessing Storm Damage Trail and campgrounds sustain damage. Public advised to use caution while recreating.
The recent storms across south central Alaska hit areas of the Chugach National Forest with heavy rain and wind. We are evaluating recreation areas and trails across the forest. A complete evaluation will not be possible until water has receded. The following areas have been impacted.
* Trails in Portage Valley have sustained damage due to the rain. Some sections of trail have exposed rock, standing water, and muddy conditions. * The Iditarod National Historic Trail in the Seward area has flooding and blocked section of trail due to down trees. These recreation facilities have sustained flooding:
* Trail River campground * Quartz Creek campground and boat ramp/picnic area, * Cooper Creek campground north, * Quartz Creek beach— vault toilet is flooded
People recreating across south central Alaska are reminded to use caution while recreating. The heavy rain has caused muddy and slippery conditions. Soils are saturated and potentially unstable. High winds have uprooted and snapped trees blocking trails and roads.
