Public input sought on proposed treatments in Wing Mountain Project
Flagstaff, AZ – The Flagstaff Ranger District has completed the Environmental Assessment for the Wing Mountain Fuels Reduction and Forest Health Restoration Project, and is seeking public input. Restoration treatments for ponderosa pine, grasslands, meadows, and springs are proposed, including thinning and prescribed burning.
The project area is approximately 11,200 acres located north of Flagstaff off Highway 180. It includes the Wing Mountain area to the southwest, and is bordered by the Kachina Peaks Wilderness, Arizona Snowbowl, and the Fort Valley Experimental Forest, as well as private and state lands.
The purpose of this project is to improve the health of forest resources, restore watershed conditions and associated habitats, and to reduce the threat of severe wildfire in and around the Wing Mountain project area. Such activities will help create conditions that support natural and desirable fire behavior with healthy and sustainable forests, meadows, and watersheds.
Comments must be submitted to Leah Schofield, Environmental Coordinator, Flagstaff Ranger District, 5075 N. Highway 89, Flagstaff, AZ 86004, phone (928) 527-8264, fax (928) 527-8288.
