Forest Service seeking comments on Forest Health Project near Turkey Butte
Flagstaff, AZ – The Flagstaff Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest has begun the public scoping process for the proposed Turkey Butte/Barney Pasture Forest Health Restoration Project southwest of Flagstaff, above the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness and Red Rock/Secret Mountain Wilderness. Members of the public are encouraged to provide their comments.
The purpose of this project is to return the forest to a state that is healthy and sustainable, enhances tree growth, improves wildlife habitat, promotes growth of understory vegetation, improves watershed function, and reduces the risk of severe wildfire while supporting natural and desirable fire behavior. Proposed activities will include thinning and burning treatments.
The project area is over 17,000 acres and located approximately 15 miles southwest of Flagstaff and ten miles northwest of Sedona, as the crow flies. “Treatments are critical in this area for several reasons,” says Mike Elson, Flagstaff District Ranger. “This particular area is in poor health and at high risk for severe fire behavior. Impacts from severe wildfire under these conditions could directly affect nearby communities and sensitive natural resources.” Watersheds in the project area connect to the Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona areas; the project area is also southwest of Flagstaff and northern Arizona’s winds predominantly blow from the southwest.
Comments for the Turkey Butte/Barney Pasture Project should be submitted to Leah Schofield, Environmental Coordinator by mail, phone, fax, or email at the following locations.
