Crews Prepare for Government Prairie Prescribed Fire
on the Williams Ranger District
WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest managers have added another prescribed fire to the list of potential projects for next week on the Williams
Ranger District. Depending on conditions, crews may conduct the 1,800-acre Government Prairie grassland burn October 19 and 20. The unit is located 16 miles northeast of Williams, southeast of Government Mountain.
The forecast shows light winds and above normal temperatures next week. Smoke will be visible along portions of I-40 during operations. Managers
expect smoke to settle in the local area overnight. Crews continue to monitor conditions across the forest for various prescribed fire projects. Prescribed burns are used to improve forest health,
enhance wildlife habitat, and return fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem. For more information, please contact Punky Moore (928-635-5653).
