Precipitation Halts Growth on Tusayan Ranger District Fires TUSAYAN, Ariz. – Three fires on the Tusayan Ranger District have stopped growing after heavy precipitation fell on the Kaibab National Forest over
the weekend. The Skinner Fire (1,737 acres) is eight miles southeast of Tusayan, Armstrong (2,600 acres) is eighteen miles southeast of Tusayan and the Lower Fire (1,788 acres) is about nine miles east of Tusayan.
The fires started by lightning in late August. For the past several weeks crews have used these fires to accomplish many resource objectives such
as returning fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem, reducing accumulated fuels, recycling important nutrients and enhancing wildlife habitat. In addition to these objectives being met, the possibility of severe wildfire occurrence has been reduced on another 6,000
acres of the forest.
Nick Larson, Tusayan District Ranger says, “I want to take this opportunity to thank the public for their patience during periods of smoke while we managed these fires and for their support of our efforts
to improve forested conditions.” Officials advise forest visitors that even though activity has subsided, the fires are not out. Visitors need to be aware of potential hazards
in the burned areas such as hidden stump holes, hot ash and fire weakened trees.
