Fire Activity on Tusayan Ranger District
TUSAYAN, Ariz. – After yesterday’s operations on the Armstrong Fire, officials report the fire is at 457 acres. It is 18 miles southeast of Tusayan and north of Red Horse Wash.
The fire is being managed for resource objectives within a pre-determined 9,300-acre area. Approximately 35 personnel are working on the incident. Crews will be south of Forest Road 320 and south along Forest Road 301 today.
In addition, a new lightning-caused fire is burning on Skinner Ridge about eight miles southeast of Tusayan. A plan has been developed and approved to manage this fire within an 8,000-acre designated boundary.
The Armstrong and Skinner Fires are burning within Game Management Unit 9. Forest visitors are advised to avoid camping near the fires. If you are traveling on the district, please slow down, use caution, and watch for fire crews and equipment.
Smoke will be visible from areas across the district and along portions of Highway 64 and Highway 180. Managers expect an increase in smoke production over the next few days. The forecast shows strong southwest winds and good ventilation during the day. However, at night smoke is following Red Horse Wash and settling into Woodland Ranch and surrounding areas.
