Beale Fire Continues to Grow

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Managers on the Beale Fire reported an additional 639 acres were burned within the designated management area yesterday.  The lightning-caused wildfire has now burned 3,781 acres in an  8,000-acre boundary southwest of Kendrick Mountain on the Williams Ranger District. The fire is being managed for resource objectives, helping restore fire in a fire adapted ecosystem and  helping reduce the potential for a wildfire to move through the area.

Operations on and around Government Mountain have caused smoke to be visible in Flagstaff  and along portions of I-40 and Highway 180. Heavier smoke impacts occurred in the Spring Valley, Peaceful Valley, Pumpkin Center and Parks area. Dense conditions on the mountain are producing these impacts and similar smoke production is expected to continue over the next few days.

Today’s operations will be to monitor the fire as it moves down Government Mountain. Fire personnel do not expect to have to do management ignitions unless it is deemed necessary to prevent a rapid spread of the fire.

Resources assigned to the incident include five engines, one water tender, two crews, one dozer and one helicopter for a total of about 60 personnel.

There are no closures associated with the Beale Fire; however, forest visitors are advised to avoid camping in or near the management area for the incident. In addition, there are potential hazards in the fire area including burning stumps, hidden stump holes and fire weakened trees. Please do not attempt to extinguish active fire within the management area. Maps are posted at several locations around the management area for reference.
