Smoke from Parallel Fire Drifting Northeast
TUSAYAN, Ariz. – Officials report some smoke from the Parallel Fire, nine miles southeast of Tusayan, is drifting northeast toward State Highway 64 and Desert View in Grand Canyon National Park. Due to these conditions, ignitions have been put on hold until the air clears.
The National Weather Service predicted temperatures in the 80s and low relative humidity Saturday. As the humidity reached the forecasted minimum mid-day, burning intensity increased in the pinyon juniper, which produced more smoke. While the burning conditions in the pinyon juniper meets resource objectives for this fuel type, managers decided to adjust tactics this afternoon to allow the smoke to dissipate.
Three engines are assigned to the incident. Personnel will continue to monitor, patrol, and work with the fire as it spreads within the designated boundary. The fire has grown to approximately 2,250 acres.
There are no closures associated with this fire; however, if you are traveling on the Tusayan Ranger District, please be cautious of personnel and equipment working in the area northeast of Red Butte.
