Update on Kaibab Fires
WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Officials report no new growth on three fires on the Kaibab National Forest due to almost daily rain showers across northern Arizona over the past week. The lightning-caused wildfires, Beale, Parallel, and Woodbridge are being managed for resource objectives such as improving forested conditions and returning fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem.
The Beale Fire (1850 acres) is 16 miles northeast of Williams near Kendrick Mountain, the Parallel (2000 acres) is nine miles southeast of Tusayan and the Woodbridge (900 acres) is 18 miles east of Tusayan.
In order to meet the resource objectives identified for these fires, crews have taken measures to prevent fire spread near wildlife habitat, cultural resources, private property, and aspen stands. In addition they have ensured the fires stayed within their designated boundaries. Fire crews continue to monitor and patrol the fires. The fire lookouts on the forest continue to monitor from their vantage point as well.
The National Weather System reports a drying trend approaching the area thru the end of the week with a decreased chance of monsoonal moisture. Fire activity and smoke may increase while this weather system exists.
Currently, fire activity includes creeping and smoldering in large logs and stumps within the interior. While the fires have slowed, they are not out. Potential hazards in the fire areas include hidden stump holes, burning logs, and fire weakened trees.
