Update on Tusayan Ranger District Fires
TUSAYAN, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest officials report drier conditions on two fires on the Tusayan Ranger District, which is causing an increase in activity.
The Parallel Fire started by lightning July 4, nine miles southeast of Tusayan near Red Butte. It has grown to approximately1,800 acres. The fire is being managed within a pre-determined 4,300-acre area. Today, crews will continue establishing fire along Forest Road 304 to secure the western boundary for the incident.
The Woodbridge Fire started by lightning
July 12, about 18 miles east of Tusayan on the Coconino Rim. It has grown
to 841 acres. The fire is being managed within a 6,000-acre area. Today,
personnel will be establishing fire on ridges near Forest Road 316 and
in Bear Tank Wash to maintain low to moderate fire spread within the management
area.
The Red Butte fire lookout reported
there were no significant smoke impacts from the fires Thursday morning;
however, smoke will be more noticeable later today as operations progress.
Smoke may linger in the local area tonight.
There are several engines and crews
working on these fires to improve forest health, reduce accumulated forest
debris, and return fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem. Activity is expected
to increase or decrease depending on the weather, terrain and fuels where
the fires are burning.
