Little Growth on Kaibab Fires

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Moderate rain fell Monday on three fires on the Kaibab National Forest. The lightning-caused fires, Beale, Parallel, and Woodbridge are being managed for resource objectives such as improving forested conditions and returning fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem.

The Beale Fire (1850 acres) is 16 miles northeast of Williams near Kendrick Mountain, the Parallel (1616 acres) is nine miles southeast of Tusayan and the Woodbridge (840 acres) is 18 miles east of Tusayan.

In order to meet the resource objectives identified for these fires, crews have taken measures to prevent rapid fire spread near wildlife habitat, cultural resources, private property, and aspen stands. In addition they have ensured the fires stayed within their designated boundaries.

Martie Schramm, Williams District Ranger comments, “We have seen positive results on the land by managing these fires for resource objectives. Importantly, each time we can manage fire in this manner, we lower the risk of a future severe wildfire on the forest, thereby protecting communities and the resources.”

Managers expect minimal growth as long as the current weather system exists. Fire activity consists of smoldering large logs and stumps within the interior of the fires. The fires will be in monitor status until conditions change.

While activity has slowed, the fires are  not out. Potential hazards in the fire areas include hidden stump holes, burning logs, and fire weakened trees.

This will be the last update unless conditions or objectives change. For additional information, please visit the Inciweb at www.inciweb.org or call Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, 928-635-5653.
