FREDONIA, Ariz. – Fire managers on the North Kaibab Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest are preparing to conduct a prescribed burn of approximately 273 acres, ten miles west of Highway 67 near the Rainbow Rim Trail. Pending favorable conditions, the burn may begin Thursday or Friday and last one to three days.

The Stina Prescribed Burn area is on Timp Point across portions of Forest Road 271. Access to the Point and Road 271 will be temporarily restricted during operations. People traveling in the area should expect to see smoke along the Rainbow Rim Trail and at scenic points.

Implementation of the prescribed burn is subject to appropriate conditions and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. The Kaibab Plateau is significantly cooler and wetter than in the areas surrounding Flagstaff, and central and southern Arizona.

The Stina Prescribed Burn is part of the district’s efforts to reduce the accumulation of hazardous fuels and restore fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem. The district appreciates public tolerance of increased vehicle traffic and temporary smoke impacts in support of these goals.
