Kaibab Lake Campground To Be Closed To Day-Use While Roads Are Repaved

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Day-use of Kaibab Lake Campground on the Williams Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest will be temporarily closed from May 17 through May 25 while the lower portions of the campground roads are repaved with asphalt.  The campground will be closed to day-use from 5 p.m. on May 17 until 8:30 a.m. on May 25 while the work takes place.

Kaibab Lake Campground, which is located about 4 miles northeast of Williams off of state Route 64, remains closed to overnight camping for the 2011 camping season while the campground undergoes reconstruction.

The May 17 through 25 closure to day-use access is necessary to allow the repaving work to be completed safely.

“We understand that Kaibab Lake is an important recreation destination for our local communities and hope this short-term closure for safety reasons won’t impact the local community too much,” said Deirdre McLaughlin, recreation forester.  “We plan to reopen the area to day-use as soon as the repaving has been completed.”

L P’s Excavating out of Williams is doing the reconstruction work, which is expected to be completed late in 2011.  For people visiting the Williams Ranger District while Kaibab Lake Campground is closed, other nearby lakes and campgrounds are available for recreation activities including camping, fishing and boating.

Dogtown Lake Campground is located about 6.5 miles southeast of Williams, and detailed information about the campground can be found at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/kaibab/dogtown_lake.

White Horse Lake Campground is located about 19 miles southeast of Williams, and detailed information about the campground can be found at www.fs.usda.gov/goto/kaibab/white_horse.

There are also several recreational lakes in the Williams area that are not associated with campgrounds that are also stocked with fish.  Information on these lakes is available through the Arizona Game and Fish Department at www.azgfd.gov/h_f/where_fish_north.shtml.

For additional information about Kaibab Lake Campground and the reconstruction schedule, please contact the Williams Ranger District at (928) 635-5600.
