Kaibab National Forest To Implement Fire Restrictions on Williams and Tusayan Districts

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – The Kaibab National Forest will implement fire restrictions at noon tomorrow (May 6) on the Williams and Tusayan ranger districts due to increasing fire danger.  These restrictions are deemed necessary to protect public health and safety by preventing human-caused wildfires.  The North Kaibab Ranger District will not be implementing fire restrictions at this time.

Under the fire restrictions on the Williams and Tusayan districts, fires, campfires, charcoal, coal and wood stoves are allowed in developed campgrounds only.  They are not permitted outside of developed campgrounds.  The restrictions also limit smoking to within enclosed vehicles, buildings or in developed campgrounds.  Pressurized liquid or gas stoves, lanterns, and heaters meeting safety specifications are allowed.

The fire restrictions will remain in place until fire danger decreases.  Violation of the prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000, imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.  Fireworks are always prohibited on National Forest land.

For additional information on fire restrictions on the Kaibab National Forest, call (928) 635-8311.  For additional information about fire restrictions on public lands in Arizona and New Mexico, call toll free 1-877-864-6985 or visit http://gacc.nifc.gov/swcc/.
