Campfire Safety on the Forest

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – As warm, dry conditions return to northern Arizona, forest visitors are urged to remember fire safety. The fire danger rating for the Williams and Tusayan districts has been elevated to moderate. While there was snow on the ground until just recently, there has been below normal precipitation over the area in April and vegetation is drying. Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Visitors are urged to practice the following campfire safety:
Clear all flammable material away from the fire for a minimum of five feet in all directions.
Make a fire only if you have a shovel and sufficient water to put it out.
Have a responsible person in attendance at all times.
        Never leave your campfire unattended.
Avoid making a campfire during the windy part of the day.
To make sure your campfire is out, drown with water and stir with dirt, making sure all burned materials are extinguished. Feel with your hand to make sure it’s out cold.

This year, in addition to the reminders above, when the National Weather Service issues a Red Flag warning, forest visitors are advised to refrain from having a campfire. Red Flag warnings are generally accompanied by strong wind and low relative humidity causing an increased potential for large fire growth. The campfire advisory will stay in effect until the Red Flag warning ends. Remember, it only takes one ember from a fire to start a new fire.
Forest visitors are encouraged to call the nearest ranger station for current conditions and information before traveling to their destination. When recreating on public lands, please enjoy your stay and be extremely careful with fire.
