Prescribed burn planned in east Flagstaff tomorrow
Flagstaff, AZ – Pending favorable conditions, fire managers are planning to conduct a 230-acre prescribed burn on Campbell Mesa east of Country Club, south of I-40 tomorrow.
This is a broadcast burn, meaning crews will apply fire to the forest floor to remove accumulated pine needles and vegetative litter. Low intensity fire recycles nutrients back into the soils to promote healthy vegetation.
Smoke will be very noticeable and will disperse to the south and west with the forecast winds. Residual smoke will remain in the immediate area and may lightly impact I-40 during the evening hours and overnight, but should lift and disperse the following morning.
Fire managers continue to work hard balancing the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires with the importance of minimizing smoke impacts to communities. The Coconino National Forest coordinates prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the overall impact of smoke on the communities.
As usual, all prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).
