Prescribed pile burning plans for Wednesday

Flagstaff, AZ – Fire managers on the Flagstaff District plan to conduct prescribed pile burns in Oak Creek Canyon as well off Townsend-Winona Road Wednesday.
Eastside Project – 5 acres of piles are located off Townsend-Winona and Manning roads. Smoke should be minimal.
Oak Creek Canyon – Piles are located in three different areas: at the confluence of Munds Canyon and Oak Creek; across from Halfway Picnic Area; and near Pine Flat Campground. Smoke will be noticeable during ignition, and some smoke may drift into the community overnight, though it should be light and disperse quickly.

All prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).

Fire managers work hard to balance the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires with the importance of minimizing smoke impacts to communities. The Coconino National Forest coordinates prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the overall impact of smoke on the communities.
