Forest Service, Partners, Go Live for Pollinators from the National Arboretum
Interactive Webcast Event on Sept. 29
WASHINGTON, September 27, 2010 - The USDA Forest Service, Prince William County School District and other partners will host a live webcast from the Washington Youth Garden at the National Arboretum Wednesday, Sept. 29 to introduce school children and communities across the nation of the important role pollinators play in our natural world, officials have announced.
"The Forest Service is eager to share conservation education programs to people of all ages, so they can better appreciate the intricate balance and beauty of natural resources," said Tom Tidwell, Chief of U.S. Forest Service. "These education programs are important because today's youth are tomorrow's conservation leaders."
The Forest Service serves as the lead federal agency for "PollinatorLIVE", a distance learning interactive adventure designed to showcase the scientific role that pollinators play in agriculture and vegetation worldwide. The production will be webcast live in English and simultaneously translated in Spanish.
An all-star cast of scientists and resource specialists will explain pollination, gardening for pollinators, plant-insect interactions, demonstrate and explain the pollinator roles of bees, bats, butterflies, birds, and other insects. One segment of the show will feature "Top Chef" finalist, Carla Hall, who will demonstrate to children how to prepare tasty and nutritious food from gardens.
