Prescribed Burn Planned Near Tusayan

TUSAYAN, Ariz. - Fire managers with the Kaibab National Forest announce they are planning to implement the Tusayan East Prescribed Fire on the Tusayan Ranger District later this week if favorable conditions allow. The project covers 90 acres south and east of the Ranger Station on the east side of Highway 64.
Managers are evaluating a set of parameters that need to be met in order to start the burn. These factors are fuel moisture, temperature, humidity, wind, and ventilation.
If conditions are appropriate and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approves the request, burning may occur later this week. Crews will ignite early in the morning to allow for maximum smoke dispersal. Smoke may settle into low lying areas overnight.
The forecast shows dry conditions returning after clouds and thunderstorms today.
Forest fire crews will implement, monitor, and patrol the project to ensure it meets objectives outlined in the prescribed burn plan. Prescribed burns are used to improve forest health, enhance wildlife habitat, and reduce hazardous fuel accumulation.
