Update on Kaibab National Forest Lightning Fires

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Light rain fell and more lightning struck the Williams Ranger District Saturday, sparking new fires across the forest. Crews reported no problems in controlling numerous fires on the north and south sides of the district. Thirteen fires have started on the forest from lightning over the last two days.

Today, forest officials placed one new fire in monitor status, eighteen miles northeast of Williams. Fire officials evaluated the location, fuels, and potential for growth on the Juniper Fire and determined it could be managed for resource objectives as it moves in this area of the forest.

Roads surround the one-acre Juniper Fire: Road 144 to the west, Road 90 to the north, Road 101 on the east and Road 171 on the south. In addition, the 2009 Wildhorse Complex is directly north of the fire. A local Type 4 organization will manage the incident. Observed fire activity was primarily smoldering and creeping.

More scattered showers and thunderstorms are predicted for Sunday. For additional information, please call Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, 928-635-5653.
