Update on Kaibab National Forest Lightning Fires

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Fire crews continue to respond to fires that started from lightning on the Williams Ranger District Friday. In addition to yesterday’s activity, engine, fuels, and helitack crews are hiking into remote locations to work on fires on Government Hill, 11 miles northeast of Williams, and Bill Williams Mountain, just south of town.

Crews are reporting no problems in controlling the fires. Altogether, eight fires at less than one acre each resulted from Friday’s storm. The fires are single trees burning with minimal creeping and smoldering ground fire.

The forest is quite damp after receiving anywhere from one-half inch to almost two inches of precipitation. Saturday’s forecast shows a good chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds near thunder cells.

It is possible that new fires may continue to surface from Friday’s storm and crews will respond accordingly.
