Eagle Rock Fire Update, 6/22/10, 9:00 a.m.

WILLIAMS, AZ – Monday’s fire behavior was quiet in spite of continued high winds.  Crews made excellent progress mopping up hot spots in the fire area and widening containment lines on all fronts.  The Eagle Rock Fire remains at 3,420 acres and is now 70% contained.  Total containment is expected on approximately June 23, 2010.  The Emergency Fire Closure around the immediate fire perimeter remains in effect.

Tuesday’s plan will concentrate on mop up. This includes widening existing containment lines and searching out and extinguishing hot spots or burning embers.  Trees that have been compromised or weakened by the Eagle Rock Fire will be dropped and used for slope stabilization where needed.  Residents should be aware of possible hazards in the area.  Hazards including falling trees, burning or smoldering stump holes, rolling rocks and boulders, unstable slopes and hill sides.

The Eagle Rock Fire is located approximately 11 miles northeast of Williams, on the northeast side Sitgreaves Mountain. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but is believed to be lightning.

The Coconino, Kaibab, and Prescott National Forests will implement fire restrictions on June 23, 2010.  Due to high fire danger, these restrictions have been deemed necessary to protect public health and safety and prevent human-caused wildfires.  These restrictions prohibit fires, campfires, charcoal, coal or wood stoves outside of developed campgrounds.  Pressurized liquid or gas stoves, lanterns, and heaters meeting safety specifications will continue to be allowed.  Visit your forest website or public office for complete information.

Kaibab Lake on the Williams Ranger District has been reopened to boating and fishing.

Resources from the Eagle Rock Fire continue to be mobilized to the Schultz Fire.  The Schultz fire grew to over 9,000 acres on Monday.  More up to date information may be obtained by calling 928-679-4175.
