Eagle Rock Fire Update, 6/21/10, 9:00 a.m.

WILLIAMS, AZ – Sunday was a challenging day with the high winds and another new fire in Flagstaff.  The Schultz fire required resources be dispatched from the Eagle Rock fire immediately.  Over 170 crew members responded including nine engines, two hot shot crews, three type two crews and a fuel crew.  The Schultz fire grew to over 3,000 acres in less than five hours.  More up to date information may be obtained by calling 928-679-4175.

The Eagle Rock Fire remains at 3,420 acres and is now 60% contained.  Total containment is now projected later this next week due to the large amount of resources that were moved to the Hardy Fire and Schultz Fire.  The remaining evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes yesterday.  Spring Valley Road (County Rd 141) was also reopened Sunday. The Emergency Fire Closure around the immediate fire perimeter remains in effect.

Monday’s plan will concentrate on mop up. This includes increasing containment lines, searching out and extinguishing hot spots or burning embers.  They will also be dropping trees that have been compromised or weakened by the Eagle Rock Fire.  Residents should be aware of possible hazards in the area.  Hazards including  falling trees, burning or smoldering stump holes, rolling rocks and boulders, unstable slopes and hill sides. Caution is strongly advised.

The Eagle Rock Fire is located approximately 11 miles northeast of Williams, on the northeast side Sitgreaves Mountain. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but is believed to be lightning.

Kaibab Lake on the Williams Ranger District is closed to boating due to fire operations.  The east side of the lake is closed to fishing.  However, the campground remains open for camping.
