Skousen Fire on Tusayan Ranger District

TUSAYAN, Ariz. – A new fire was detected on the Tusayan Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest after thunderstorms and lightning passed over the area last weekend. The lightning-caused Skousen Fire is located 16 miles southeast of Tusayan and reported at two acres. Suppression actions are being taken on the Skousen Fire.

The fire was called in by the Red Butte Lookout on Monday, June 14. Upon evaluation of the current and expected weather conditions, fire activity in the region and growth potential, fire managers decided to implement a suppression strategy.

Sixteen personnel are assigned to the incident. A fireline will be constructed around the perimeter and smoldering timber, brush and grass will be extinguished.

There is a fire weather watch in the forecast for Wednesday, due to low relative humidity and strong winds. For additional information, please contact Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, 928-635-5653.
