Newly Appointed Kenai Peninsula-Anchorage Borough RAC First Meets
Members meet June 12 to provide recommendations to Forest Service on forest improvement projects
Anchorage, Alaska- Members of the newly-formed Kenai Peninsula-Anchorage Resource Advisory Committee (RAC) will meet Saturday, June 12, 2010, at the Begich Boggs Visitor’s Center from 9 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. The 15 members were recently appointed by Secretary of Agriculture to provide recommendations to the Forest Service on forest improvement projects.
Saturday, the RAC will be meeting for the purpose of establishing the Committee through the development of bylaws, a chairperson, and a future meeting schedule. In the coming year, they will discuss and deliberate on recommended project proposals that may be submitted by members of the public, Forest Service employees, and RAC members themselves. The public input and comment forum will take place the afternoon of June 12, 2010. Interested citizens are encouraged to attend.
The RAC provides advice and recommendations to the Forest Service on the development and implementation of special projects that will enhance or improve the forest under the provisions of Title II of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2008. The RAC currently has access to over $300,000 in Title II funds from 2009 and 2010 to fund these projects. The Act runs through 2012 and the RAC will receive additional annual funding as it becomes available.
The Kenai Peninsula/Anchorage RAC members represent diverse interests and areas of expertise. Each member had to apply for the position, be nominated, and appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture. The designated federal official for this RAC is Chugach National Forest Seward Ranger Travis Moseley.
