 Robinson Wildfire near Sunset Crater

Date/Time Started: Late Saturday, May 22, 2010

Location:    Near Robinson Crater, about 12 miles north of Flagstaff and 1 mile northwest of Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. There is no threat to structures, private property, or nearby Bonito and O’Leary campgrounds.

Cause: Human-caused.

Size: About 8 acres. Firefighters are optimistic they can hold the fire perimeter, and prevent the fire from growing larger even with high winds.

Resources Committed: 2 Hotshot crews, 1 fuels crew, 3 engines, 2 water-tenders; about 60 firefighters total.

Predicted Weather: The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the Flagstaff area until 7:00 P.M. this evening, for winds 25 – 35 mph with gusts up to 45 to 55 mph.

Summary: Campers and forest visitors are reminded to be very careful with fire during high winds. Don’t light a campfire during the windy part of the day, and don’t light a campfire if you don’t have a shovel and enough water to put it out. If a campfire is ignited, make sure it’s cold and dead out with no remaining embers, before the next morning when winds pick up.
In addition to the Robinson Fire, six wildfires were reported yesterday on the Coconino National Forest, all human caused. All six wildfires were quickly suppressed due to rapid response by fire crews.
