Forest Service Urges Caution With Fire

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest officials urge the public to use extreme caution with campfires and activities that could cause wildfires. The transition from winter to summer occurs rapidly as weather conditions in Northern Arizona can change the fuel moisture levels throughout the forest in a relatively short time frame.

There is a red flag warning in effect today and strong winds are predicted to persist through the weekend. “People should come and enjoy the Kaibab National Forest, but they should also remember that everyone has the responsibility to prevent human-caused wildfires,” said Martie Schramm, Williams District Ranger for the Kaibab National Forest. “Please always practice fire safety when visiting and camping on the Forest.”

Forest Service fire crews are geared up and ready to respond to any fires, whether human- or naturally-caused.  Fire crews will patrol the forest this weekend to inform visitors about weather and potential fire conditions.

There are many things people can do to ensure a safe weekend.  One tip for those planning to have a camp fire is to always bring along a shovel and enough water to put it out.  Another tip is to always build camp fires in appropriate locations.  Forest visitors should use existing camp fire rings to minimize impacts to the area and to the soil.  A fire should always be built in an area with bare dirt surrounding it.

Forest officials remind the public to never leave a campfire unattended and be sure that it is fully out before leaving the area. In addition, campers should be extremely careful with cigarettes, charcoal grills and catalytic converters. It only takes one spark to start a fire.

Fire managers will continue to evaluate weather and fuel conditions to assess the need for fire restrictions. For more information, please call Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer at 928-635-5653.
