RUTH MONAHAN APPOINTED ACTING REGIONAL FORESTER FOR ALASKA REGION

WASHINGTON, December 31, 2009—USDA Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell announced today the appointment of Ruth Monahan as acting Regional Forester for the Alaska Region.  Ms. Monahan currently serves as Alaska Region Director for Recreation, Lands & Minerals.  Denny Bschor, who has served as Alaska Regional Forester for eight years, is retiring.
“Ms. Monahan brings extensive experience in management of natural resources to the acting Regional Forester position”, Tidwell said.  “We are extremely fortunate to be able to tap her exceptional leadership skills and expertise at this time.”
Ms. Monahan began her Forest Service career as a student trainee in 1980. From 1982 to 1990 she worked in timber management, recreation, fire management, and forest planning on national forests in Washington and Idaho. She served as district ranger on the Payette National Forest from 1990 until 1992, when she became wilderness and wild and scenic rivers specialist for the Intermountain Region. In 1996 she became the district ranger on the Wasatch-Cache National Forest.  Ms. Monahan also served as  acting deputy forest supervisor for the National Forests and Grasslands of Texas and acting regional director for recreation, wilderness and, heritage for the Intermountain Region.  Ms. Monahan became supervisor of the Sawtooth National Forest in 2002 and assumed her position as Alaska Region Director for Recreation, Lands & Minerals in 2006.
Monahan holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Forest Management from Washington State University.
