Fire Managers To Continue Burning Piles on Williams Ranger District

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest fire managers plan to continue burning slash piles tomorrow and possibly Friday in two areas on the Williams Ranger District.  About 386 acres of piles are available for burning just southeast of Sherwood Forest Estates near Mineral Lake.  An additional 133 acres of piles are also available for burning near Spring Valley Cabin between Government and RS hills.

Ignition of the piles will begin early in the day, and smoke impacts will be closely monitored.  The decision to continue igniting piles on Friday will depend on approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and observed smoke impacts from tomorrow’s ignition.

Piles are made up of stacked tree slash cut during thinning projects.  The goal of both the thinning work and the pile burning is to reduce fire hazard and protect communities and forest resources.
