Federal Subsistence Board closes doe hunting on Federal lands in a portion of Unit 4 in Southeast Alaska
Sitka—The Hoonah and Sitka District Rangers, under their authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, are taking immediate action to close the taking of female deer (does) in the Northeast Chichagof Controlled Use Area of Unit 4 for conservation purposes.
The closure is effective beginning at:
11:59 p.m., Monday, Sept. 14, 2009
It will remain in effect until:
11:59 p.m., Friday, Nov.13, 2009
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is taking concurrent action.
Record snowfall during the winter of 2006-2007 resulted in substantial winter mortality of deer. Similar snowfall occurred in the winters of 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. Persistent snow pack in the spring of 2009 contributed to increased deer mortality.
Deer pellet transects, winter mortality surveys, Unit 4 deer harvest data, and testimony from hunters in the Northeast Chichagof Controlled Use Area indicates a significant reduction in the deer population from previous years. Restricting the taking of female deer is necessary to allow the recovery of the deer population.
A map and description of the Northeast Chichagof Controlled Use Area are located on page 34 and 35 of the Federal Subsistence Hunting Regulation booklets, available at Forest Service offices.
