JUNEAU DISTRICT TO HOST NATIONAL GET OUTDOORS DAY

Juneau, AK – What are you doing Saturday, June 13? The Juneau Ranger District invites you to get outside to celebrate the second annual National Get Outdoors Day.

National Get Outdoors Day is co-sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service and the American Recreation Coalition. Juneau is just one of more than 50 locations nationwide providing a variety of free recreational events designed to introduce children and the American public to the great outdoors, and to foster a deeper appreciation for nature. It’s part of the Forest Service’s effort to get more kids in the woods.

“More so now than at any other time in history, our children are experiencing a disconnection from nature,” said Forest Service Chief Abigail Kimbell. “We want every child in America to have the opportunity to experience the great outdoors, whether it’s in a remote mountain wilderness or a city park.”

Juneau events include the following:

Family Fishing Day, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Twin Lakes
Features games, Gyotaku (fish printing), and Sammy Salmon. Sponsored by the Community of Juneau, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Forest Service, DIPAC (Douglas Island Pink and Chum, Inc.), Rotary Club, City and Borough of Juneau, Territorial Sportsment, Western Auto, Northern Sales, Odom Company, Super Bear Supermarket, Bullwinkle’s Pizza, and Behrends Mechanical.

Colors of the Rainbow, 11 a.m.-noon, Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Pavilion
Children 4-6 years will be looking for colors in nature. Part of “Forest Explorers” weekly event.

Crystal Lake Day Camp Open House, Noon-4 p.m., in the Crystal Lake Yurt
Ongoing and hourly events include family activities such as geocaching, nature photography, shelter building, hiking, papermaking and contests with prizes. The Crystal Lake Yurt is located on the trails behind the Juneau Ranger District, 8510 Mendenhall Loop Road. Park at the Juneau Ranger District and follow signs on hiking trail. Biking is encouraged, as parking is limited.
