Hoonah and Haines meetings for motorized use plan rescheduled

Juneau, AK – The U.S. Forest service has rescheduled public meetings and subsistence hearings that were postponed earlier this month due to bad weather. Tongass National Forest officials are holding the meetings to seek public input regarding motorized use on Juneau Ranger District and Admiralty National Monument.

Upcoming meetings (followed by separate subsistence hearings in the same timeframe) will be held as noted below:

Haines
Haines City Hall
Fri., March 20
5:30-7:30 p.m.

Hoonah
Hoonah Ranger District
Fri., March 20
5:00-7:00 p.m.

Gustavus
Gustavus School District
Sat., March 21
10 a.m.-noon

Motorized use of roads is being evaluated as part of the effort to develop an Access Travel Management plan for the districts. The process will ultimately result in the publication of a Motor Vehicle Use Map designating which roads, trails, and areas on the districts are open to motorized vehicle use.

Public comments will help the Forest Service develop alternatives for an environmental assessment for the project area, which includes the Juneau mainland, Admiralty Island, and the Couverden vicinity. At present, the agency is not proposing any changes to motorized travel on the existing road and trail systems on the districts.

Large-scale maps will be available for review at public meetings, hearings, and at the office of the Juneau Ranger District and Admiralty National Monument. Send comments by mail or fax to: Juneau District Ranger, 8510 Mendenhall Loop Road, Juneau, AK 99801; or fax (907) 586-8808. The deadline to comment is March 31.
