WASHINGTON, June 26, 2023 – On Tuesday, June 27, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will travel to Michigan. There, he will join Senator Debbie Stabenow, Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, for a series of events highlighting the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to help build more, new, and better markets for producers and strengthen local and regional supply chains in Michigan, as well as ensure children have access to healthy and nutritious meals during the summer.
In the morning, Secretary Vilsack and Chairwoman Stabenow will visit a local market in
Detroit, where they will discuss how USDA’s initiatives and investments in Detroit and across the state are helping to build more, new, and better markets for producers and entrepreneurs; establish more income opportunities for producers and more options for consumers to buy healthy, locally produced products; create good jobs; and strengthen local and regional supply chains in Michigan.
In the early afternoon, Secretary Vilsack and Chairwoman Stabenow will travel to a USDA
Summer Food Service Program site to discuss the Department’s ongoing efforts to ensure children have access to healthy and nutritious meals, which is a key aspect of the Biden-Harris Administration’s National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health to end hunger and reduce diet-related diseases and health disparities by 2030. The event follows actions taken by USDA, with new authority provided by Congress through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, to expand access to nutrition for kids during the summer by allowing more options for rural areas to distribute nutritious meals to kids. USDA is
also working to implement a permanent Summer EBT program, authorized under that
act, beginning in the summer of 2024 that provides eligible families with more
resources to purchase healthy food.
