Media Advisory No. 0045.15 Contact: Secretary Tom Vilsack, AMS Administrator Anne Alonzo to Open USDA Farmers Market on Friday, May 1, 2015
WASHINGTON, April 30, 2015—Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will open the USDA Farmers Market for its 20th season on Friday, May 1, 2015, at 8:30 a.m. The Secretary will be joined by USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) Administrator Anne Alonzo. The outdoor farmers market, located just off the National Mall at 12th and Independence Ave, S.W., has doubled in size this year to include over 30 vendors.
AMS organizes the market, which serves as an example of how farmers markets across the nation bring communities together around fresh, local foods and products. Like the 8,300 farmers markets around the country, the USDA Farmers Market plays an important role in creating economic opportunities for local farmers and small businesses.
This year, the market will be open on Fridays (except for July 3) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 1 through October 30, 2015. For the first time, a night market will be open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the third Friday of the month beginning Friday, May 15, 2015. The "USDA Farmers Market-at Night" will feature fresh fruit and vegetables as well as a variety of prepared food and entertainment.
