FEATURE: More Solar
Power For USDA
INTRO:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is “harvesting” energy from a new solar “farm”.
The U-S-D-A’s Bob Ellison has more. (1:27)
U-S-D-A WILL HARVEST THE
SAVINGS OF A NEW SOLAR FARM ON ITS BELTSVILLE MARYLAND CAMPUS. SECRETARY
VILSACK HELPED CUT THE RIBBON AND FLIPPED THE “ON” SWITCH AT THE NEW ONE POINT
SIX MEGAWATT SOLAR FARM AT THE GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER CENTER JUST OUTSIDE THE
NATION’S CAPITAL.
Tom Vilsack,
Agriculture Secretary:
Every year we continue to invest in renewable energy generation and
transmission, helping to lead with the Department of Energy, this amazing
revolution, this energy revolution that we’re engaged in in the U-S.
Curtis Wilburn, Director,
USDA Office of Operations:
The George Washington Carver Center, by twenty-twenty, will be energy
independent. We’re committed to that goal. The project that you see behind us
on six point two acres of solar paneled farm is a beginning to helping us to
achieve complete energy independence over the next five years.
THE SOLAR FARM PROJECT IS
THE LARGEST OF ITS KIND IN THE NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION AND IS PART OF THE
EFFORT TO MEET THE PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE TO FEDERAL AGENCIES TO REDUCE
GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS FOR FORTY PERCENT.
David Danielson, Assistant Secretary Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy,
U.S. Department of Energy: Achieving the President’s bold goal will mean a
reduction of more than twenty million metric tons of c-o two which is the equivalent
of taking four point two million cars off the road for a whole year.
THE NEW SOLAR FARM IN
BELTSVILLE IS EXPECTED TO HANDLE MOST OF THE CARVER CENTER’S DAYTIME ELECTRICAL
NEEDS AND TO SAVE OVER THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR IN ELECTRIC COSTS.
IN WASHINGTON FOR THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, I’M BOB ELLISON.
