Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to Discuss New State-by-State Data on Schools and the Implementation of Updated Nutrition Standards

WASHINGTON, March 20, 2014 - TODAY, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will host a national media call to discuss progress being made in the implementation of healthier meal standards for the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program made possible by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Secretary Vilsack will also discuss recent actions that USDA has taken to support schools in implementing the updated nutrition standards.

The Secretary will be joined by Jessica Donze Black, Director of the Kids’ Safe and Healthful Foods Project – a collaboration of The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Ms. Donze Black will discuss new state-by-state reports based on an independent study by the Project, which highlight the number of schools successfully meeting the meal standards, and detail the types and costs of kitchen upgrades that each state needs to better serve healthy meals. The research finds that schools would be better able to serve meals that meet nutrition requirements if investments were made in new equipment.
