Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to Discuss Improved Nutrition in Schools

WASHINGTON, June 27, 2013 - TODAY, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will host a national media call to discuss improvements to the foods sold in our nation’s schools. The Smart Snacks in School rule announced today ensures that over 50 million American children will be offered healthier food options during the school day.

Smart Snacks in School carefully balances science-based nutrition guidelines with practical and flexible solutions to promote healthier eating on campus, drawing on recommendations from the Institute of Medicine and existing voluntary standards already implemented by thousands of schools around the country, as well as healthy food and beverage offerings already available in the marketplace.

He will be joined by Lieutenant General Norman R. Seip, UASF (Ret) of Mission:Readiness, Mary Story, Ph.D., R.D., of the University of Minnesota, and Rick Goff, Executive Director for the Office of Child Nutrition for the West Virginia Department of Education.
