Media Advisory: USDA and National Academy of Sciences’ Koshland Science Museum Encourage Consumers to “Take the Healthy Plate Challenge”
WASHINGTON, November 15, 2012 – TODAY, the National Academy of Sciences’ Koshland Science Museum will kick off a trilogy of activities to encourage kids and all consumers toward a lifetime of healthy eating habits using the popular U.S. Department of Agriculture food icon, MyPlate. The centerpiece is an event with DC Central Kitchen called the Healthy Plate Cook-Off. Teams of Culinary Job Training students will prepare meals inspired by MyPlate and ChooseMyPlate.gov. Meals in the cook-off will be judged by the audience for taste; by professional chefs for appearance; and by members of the Institute of Medicine’s Food and Nutrition Board and USDA officials for nutritional value. Prior to the cook-off, the teams learn about healthy meal planning from members of the Institute of Medicine’s Food and Nutrition Board. Photos from the inaugural Healthy Plate Cook-Off in February 2012 can be found at: http://www.dccentralkitchen.org/koshland-science-museum-hosts-dccks-first-healthy-plate-cook-off/.
The Healthy Plate Cook-Off complements the launch of a new Koshland Science Museum exhibit. Food for Thought presents a digital interactive experience challenging visitors to shop a virtual grocery store or school cafeteria and use MyPlate, and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans that support it, to make healthy, nutritionally balanced food choices on a budget. Reporters are invited to tour the exhibit.
Finally, there is an invitation to “Take the Healthy Plate Challenge.” By planning, preparing, and sharing healthy plates modeled after MyPlate, photographing or filming the final meal, and sharing the photo/video, entrants are eligible to win an online popular vote and receive a personal selection of Koshland Science Museum swag! The submission deadline is Monday, December 17, 2012, at 3:30pm.
