USDA Hosts Media Conference Call to Discuss Historic Changes to School Meals
WASHINGTON, Wednesday, August 29, 2012 – TODAY at 2 p.m. EDT, Agriculture Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services Kevin Concannon, along with School Nutrition Association National President Sandy Ford and National Parent Teacher Association President Betsy Landers, will host a media conference call to discuss the changes to school meals being implemented this year.
The new standards, established under the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, ensure students are offered both fruits and vegetables every day of the week; substantially increase offerings of whole grain-rich foods and low-fat or fat-free milk; limit calories based on the age of children being served to ensure proper portion size; and focus on reducing the amounts of saturated fat, trans fat and sodium.
