Vilsack to Join Senator Stabenow, Meet with Michigan Producers and Highlight Importance of Agriculture to State’s Economy
WASHINGTON, August 22, 2011- TODAY, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will join U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry to highlight the importance of agriculture to Michigan’s economy and efforts to boost job creation through agricultural products. Michigan is one of the most agriculturally diverse states in the nation, producing more than 200 different food commodities at farms of a wide range of sizes. The Michigan agri-food industry contributes $71.3 billion annually to the state’s economy, making it the state’s second-largest economic driver.

Rapids to give Michigan farmers an opportunity to discuss their ideas for expanding jobs in agriculture. Local farmers and agriculture leaders will discuss with Secretary Vilsack some of the exciting things happening in areas like biofuels, food processing, and specialty crops.
