MEMBERS NAMED TO SEVEN AGRICULTURAL
TRADE ADVISORY COMMITTEES

        WASHINGTON, Aug. 22, 2005-Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns and U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman today announced the appointment of private-sector members to the Agricultural Policy Advisory Committee for Trade (APAC) and six Agricultural Technical Advisory Committees for Trade (ATACs). Members will serve until May 2007.

        "Expanding market access for America's farmers and ranchers is fundamental to the future economic viability of our agriculture," said Johanns. "The expertise and unique knowledge provided by our committee members are instrumental in developing effective negotiating objectives, particularly as trade barriers have become far more complex. I look forward to the technical, practical, and political advice that helps strengthen trade formulation these committee members will offer."

"American agriculture continues to play a critical role in our agenda of opening markets and expanding opportunities around the world," said Portman. "The advice offered by these committee members will help ensure that Americans are competing on a level playing field and have the opportunity to sell their world class goods in overseas markets."

Congress established the advisory committees in 1974 to ensure a private-sector voice in establishing U.S. agricultural trade policy objectives to reflect U.S. commercial and economic interests. USDA and USTR jointly manage the committees.

The APAC provides the Secretary of Agriculture and the U.S. Trade Representative advice and information on negotiating objectives, bargaining positions and other matters related to the development, implementation and administration of U.S. agricultural trade policy. The ATACs offer technical advice and information on specific commodities.

The six ATACs are:
·     Animals and Animal Products;
·     Fruits and Vegetables;
·     Grains, Feed and Oilseeds;
·     Processed Foods;
·     Sweeteners and Sweetener Products;
· Tobacco, Cotton, Peanuts, and Planting Seeds.

Lists of members by committee are attached.
