| If you use maildir, then you'll need to figure out which mail causes
| this an delete it manually. There are some malformed headers that cause
| kmail to lock up like this.

After issues, some of which I've reported here, I've come to discover that
a good treatment for kmail maildir directories is to rename the mail
directory, copy its contents to a new directory with the original name of
the mail directory, and once everything is copied to opeen kmail again. A
surprising amount of time it solves the problem.

(As long as I'm here, I mentioned the machine just up and crashing from
time to time. I do not know that I found the cause, but the installation
of a new, clean, much, much larger chip cooler has resulted in it no
longer doing that.)
