In my kmail the green > is for forwarding while the green Λ is for sending.

When happens then is determined by the Configure KMail / Accounts / Sending
/ Default Send Method, which I have set to Send Now.

If my KMail is unable to connect to the server the mail is placed in Local
/ Outbox instead.  The reason why KMail cannot connect to a server might be
determined by running a packet tracer such as tcpdump.
