For my terminal-based desktop objects:  I would right click on the icon,

Properties >> Application >> Advanced Options >> Tick "[ ] Run in terminal"
then you are given the option to "[ ] Do not close when command exists".

I know not what TDE configuration file or value this affects/sets.

FWIW, I have quite a few terminal-based applications, and I have never
bothered to tick "[ ] Run in terminal".  I don't know what I might be
missing.  :-)
