I do this regularly when I install a new system and I don't find it "insanely" dangerous. One can destroy one's system with su, as far as I can think. I would not work as root, but booting as root for some settings makes sense to me. Just my own opinion :) - And I do keep a full disk backup even if I don't log in as root...
