That's what I do. tar.bz2 the entire thing. However, I use /home/foo/settings 
to keep all the important stuff in one dir.  Easier to backup.

I think the last time I lost data was about 18 years ago. Excluding my own 
mistakes. 

Not that I have EVER made mistakes 0_o.
