Interesting. On some of my T60 I see this: Sound is initialized by ALSA to 50% (that's what I make in rc.local). When TDE is up and running, pressing any volume key for the first time sets sound to 0%. On some other unites the sound is always muted but set to some volume - unmuting does not change volume, but changing volume without first unmuting does not unmute. On a third set of units things work just as they should. IMO this is a alsa/kernel problem, as the behaviour is consistent for the chipsets used.
