No idea where to get custom icons. In /usr/share/icons/hicolor, 32x32 is the largest that has an icon for both Firefox and Thunderbird, but there is no setting to change the icon. Right-clicking any of them, brings up a menu Add (and Remove) Application and Configure Quicklauncher.
