autodetect itself is handled by the drives firmware, then - when the drive is happy with the disk - the kernel and udev. If you want to disable the icon - which is just a GUI thingie and has nothing to do with the autodetect - go to "Kontrollzentrum -> Arbeitsfläche -> Verhalten" and select the tab "Gerätesymbole". Adjust th markers to your needs.
